Runners need a serious treadmill. They often have more difficulty choosing the right one because they need a more durable and heavier duty treadmill than those who just walk or jog. It’s important that runners choose the right treadmill, with a heavy motor and a good warranty, since they will give the treadmill as much of a workout as it gives them.
The Smooth Fitness 9.35HR treadmill may be a good choice for middle to higher end users. The price, at around $2000 is about average for this category. But, the treadmill has a good warranty and enough features to satisfy the regular user who wants to run regularly and who needs a good challenge.
The Smooth Fitness 9.35 comes with a 3.0 horsepower continuous duty motor with a lifetime warranty. The speed ranges from .5 to 11.2 miles per hour and the incline adjusts 15 levels (not 15%). The running deck is 20×54 inches, which makes it long enough and wide enough to be comfortable and to accommodate the stride of runners and taller people. The Hydra suspension feature is pretty cool; it allows you to adjust the cushioning on the deck to your comfort level. This is a great feature, particularly if you have joint or knee problems.
The Smooth 9.35 has a good feature set, too. The motion control feature on this treadmill is one of the best ideas out there for runners. Rather than having to adjust your speed on the console, you can just wave your hand over it as you’re running to increase or decrease speed, keeping you from losing your stride or your concentration when you run. There are five pre-set programs, including, their “killer hills” program, which lets you pick your hill incline along with a pre-set time for completing the hills. There are also heart rate control programs that let you ensure that your heart rate stays in your training zone by adjusting your speed automatically.
This feature is wireless, too, which is helpful.
The LCD console allows you to track your time, distance, heart rate, speed and calories burned as you work out. You can store user information for multiple users. The weight capacity is 400 pounds, so it can accommodate large users. You can store user information for up to nine people, so it’s a good choice for families with multiple users.
The warranty is very good. In addition to the lifetime warranty on the motor, there is a lifetime warranty on the frame, 7 years on parts and electronics and 2 years on in home service.
User ratings on this treadmill are very good. The chief complaint is size and difficulty getting in the home and assembled. However, if you want a durable and stable treadmill for running, you have to expect it to be large. You can pay extra for “white glove” shipping service, which will get the treadmill delivered into your home and set up for you, if you desire. Otherwise, have another set of hands around to help you with it, because it is very large, and the free shipping will only bring it to your driveway, or inside your garage if you’re very lucky. And, don’t plan to move it around once it is set up. It does not fold and, once assembled, will be too wide to fit through standard doorways.
Another complaint that some users have is with the height of the console. Users who are shorter report that they often bump into it with their arms when jogging. It is not adjustable, so this should be taken into consideration by shorter runners.
It is important to note that the incline adjustment on Smooth treadmill products is not in percentages, as you’ll find with other treadmills. The 9.35 adjusts to 15 different levels of incline, not a 15% incline. You’ll find that their highest level of adjustment will not give you a 15% grade.
The overall user ratings on this treadmill are extremely good. Users report that the adjustable cushioning on the running surface really makes a difference and that they can really feel the lower impact on joints and knees. They feel that the product is extremely high quality.
This is a high end treadmill, with a high end price tag, but most who have bought it feel that it is well worth the money they paid. It has proven to be durable and to have enough features to keep even the most serious of runners challenged. The special features of motion control for the speed and the adjustable cushioning on the deck set this treadmill apart from others in its category for features.
It pays to shop around to ensure you get just the right treadmill for you. In this price category, you should also look at the Sole S77 and the Bowflex Series 7 for comparison.
Reading reviews and specifications online is a great way to narrow down your choices in treadmills. There is lots of information available online. However, before you choose which treadmill to buy, it’s a wise idea to try your favorites out in person. That way, you can really see how sturdy they feel, how you like the display and if the features are really what you had in mind.
When it comes time to buy, purchasing online is often a wise choice. With most online retailers, shipping, at least to the driveway, is included in the price. And, online retailers typically have prices that are very competitive, and often, even better than your local sporting goods store. Plus, you don’t have to worry about how to get it home!
You’re sure to love having a treadmill in the convenience of your own home. You’re much more likely to stick with your fitness plans when you don’t have to get to the gym or worry about running in the rain. There’s a very good reason that treadmills are the most often purchased piece of fitness equipment: they’re the one people will actually use!
